Koi Fish and Their Early History

Early koi fish were first identified in China over 2,000 years ago, although most of the colorful fish we now consider Nishikigoi (koi) have a mostly Japanese background. Koi are a type of large carp that were initially raised as a food source in Asian societies. Some of the fish were found to be more colorful than others, and through selective breeding has led to even more vibrant koi in a wider variety of colors. Over 200 varieties of koi can be found today, and they are often referred to as swimming or living jewels.

Koi Fish in Japan

Koi fish are particularly symbolic in traditional Japanese culture due to their early prominence in the region's rice bogs as well as the high overall importance of symbolism in Japanese and other Asian cultures. While they were originally intended to be a food source like other types of carp, their vivid colors quickly led their farmers to shift to raising them as pets. Although most koi are brightly colored, mutations caused by specific breeding habits created fish in even more vibrant hues, some having accidental patterns. The rice farmers began bringing their favorites home and made intentional decisions to experiment with breeding in efforts to produce exceptionally beautiful koi in specific colors.

Approximately one century after koi fish were first bred as aesthetic pets, Emperor Hirohito received one as a gift. Word of the unique and beautiful fish that was now owned by nobility quickly spread throughout Japan and eventually around the world, so that people of every class became interested in owning one of the most beautiful types of fish they’d ever seen.

Koi Fish Colors and Their Meanings

Today's koi fish can be found in a wide range of distinct colors and patterns, many of which were originally intentionally bred to represent specific concepts. Many colors, in general, tend to have specific meanings, especially in Asian cultures, and some patterns go deeper than basic color symbolism.

For example, gold and silver koi are both intended to represent wealth. Gold koi symbolize personal riches, while silver koi lean toward business success. White koi with red patches can represent love, relationships, success, or prosperity, while blue spots on white koi can symbolize strength and prosperity. White and black or solid black koi symbolize transformation and life changes, which can make them an especially common choice for new koi owners who are pursuing major personal or business goals. The solid black koi is indicative of good luck, so most koi enthusiasts yearn to have one in their personal koi collections.
